Introduction
Discover the secrets of wild Africa in the tradition of the continent’s great explorers, in small camps reflecting the bygone era of canvas tents, brass hipbaths under the stars and vintage furnishings.
Experience three days on a remote stretch of the Selinda Spillway where expert guides will focus on walking and canoe trips followed by the next three days in classic Okavango Delta floodplains with a matrix of palm-dotted islands and woodlands to explore. Guided walks, boating and open air 4×4 safaris reveal one of the most varied and expansive wildlife areas in the world. Relish in the knowledge of exploring the very same area of the Okavango Delta which is the base of many famous wildlife documentaries by National Geographic filmmakers Dereck and Beverly Joubert.
Itinerary
Day 1 : Kasane > Selinda
Light aircraft transfer to Selinda Explorers Camp for three nights. Custom-designed tents feature two rooms plus veranda and private open-air showers. After days spent walking and canoeing, while away the heat of the afternoon in a hammock, the perfect respite after an adventure-packed day.
Located on a remote stretch of the Selinda Spillway, in the heart of the private 130,000 hectare Selinda Reserve, Selinda Explorers is an intimate camp designed in the style of the early explorers. The camp’s magic lies in its expedition-style, with campaign furniture and vintage travelling trunks that lend an authentic, transient atmosphere to the camp.
Wildlife viewing is focused on guided walks and canoeing (when water levels allow) in addition to drives, allowing guests to take in the smaller things often missed from a vehicle. The area is also a wildlife hotspot home to herds of elephant and buffalo with lion, leopard, African wild dog and sable and roan antelope seen on a regular basis. After days spent walking and canoeing, while away the heat of the afternoon in a hammock, the perfect respite from the ‘daily grind’ of a traditional safari.
Days 2 & 3 : Selinda
This area is a wildlife hotspot which is home to huge herds of elephant and buffalo. It is here that lion, wild dog, sable and roan antelope are all spotted on a regular basis. And with a focus on walking, you will be seeing the small, incredibly interesting things often missed on vehicles.
Day 4 : Selinda > Okavango Delta
Light aircraft transfer to Duba Explorers Camp for three nights. Expedition style tents on raised decking feature beautiful views of the surrounding floodplain.
Duba Explorers Camp in Northern Botswana is tucked away in the northeast corner of the Duba Plains concession, a 77,000 acres private reserve in the Okavango Delta. Due to its location at the northern reaches of the Okavango Delta, the surroundings are dominated by permanent floodplain, interspersed with seasonal floodplains and grasslands and pockets of mopane and acacia woodlands. Under a canopy of mature jackalberry, leadwood, mangosteen and sycamore fig trees the camp has year-round shade. Its location provides clear, unobstructed views across the surrounding water channels and allows cool breezes through the camp and guest tents.
Duba Explorers Camp prides itself on its extraordinary wildlife experiences, and rightly so, with regular sightings of a diverse range of species, including Greater kudu, tsessebe and large herds of Red lechwe. Elephant and hippo trudge happily through swamps and lion are regularly seen. Leopard, and nocturnal species such as Brown hyena can be sighted as well. Wildlife is a regular sight right in camp! Birds abound, and the area is a birdwatcher’s paradise. Okavango ‘specials’ include the rare wattled crane, Pel’s fishing owl, white-backed Night heron and Marsh owl.
Days 5 & 6 : Okavango Delta
Enjoy a thrilling safari during your three night stay at Duba Expedition Camp. The area is the base of many famous wildlife documentaries by National Geographic filmmakers Dereck and Beverly Joubert. Activities here include guided walks, day and night game drives by open air 4×4 customised vehicles, catch-and-release fishing, motorised boating and mekoro (subject to water levels).
Days 7 : Okavango Delta > Maun
Light aircraft transfer to Maun, for your onward flights.
