Introduction
This itinerary offers the best of both worlds.
From the bright lights of Tokyo and Osaka to walking sections of the Nakasendo and Kumano Kodo trails, this unforgettable journey will allow you to experience traditional ryokans and onsens, shop in local markets, cycle and walk through wonderful scenery and soak in the vibrancy of Japan’s largest cities.
Itinerary
Day 1 : Tokyo
Transfer to your hotel by regular scheduled airport bus.
Day 2 : Tokyo
Enjoy a full day at leisure to explore Tokyo independently.
Day 3 : Tokyo > Matsumoto
Take the train to Matsumoto. Meet your guide for an afternoon tour of Matsumoto, including a visits to Matsumoto Castle and Nakamachi-dori with its well-preserved buildings, and learn how miso is fermented using traditional natural methods.
Day 4 : Matsumoto > Hirayu Onsen (Okuhida)
Board the bus for Hirayu Onsen in the Okuhida area and make your way to your ryokan. Perhaps try a soak in the traditional onsen before dinner this evening.
Day 5 : Hirayu Onsen (Okuhida)
Today’s sightseeing can be tailored to meet your interests – there are a range of nice walks in the area including the beautiful mountain valley of Kamikochi.
Day 6 : Hirayu Onsen (Okuhida) > Takayama
Travel by bus to Takayama. Make your way to the hotel and this afternoon is at leisure.
Day 7 : Takayama
This morning travel by local train to Hida-Furukawa for a private cycling excursion (2.5 hours). Get a feel for local village life as you cycle the flat roads in this rice growing area. Later take the train back to Takayama where your afternoon is at leisure.
Day 8 : Takayama > Magome > Tsumago
Take the bus to Magome, where today’s walk on one of the most challenging parts of the Nakasendo Trail will take you over Magome Pass to Tsumago, one of the best preserved and most evocative of the Nakasendo post-towns. At the end of the trail at Tsumago, make your way to your ryokan for check-in.
Day 9 : Tsumago > Nagoya > Toba
Take the train to Nagoya for some time at leisure before continuing on by train to Toba. Transfer to the hotel for overnight.
Day 10 : Toba
Join your guide to visit the Ise Grand Shrine and Mikimoto Pearl Island, a small island in Ise Bay known as the birthplace of cultured pearl aquaculture.
Day 11 : Toba > Kii Katsuura
Take the train to Kii Katsuura. This afternoon travel by local bus to Daimonzaka Chushajo-mae and walk the trail that allows you to visit Kumano Nachi Taisha, Seigan-toji Temple and Nachi falls. Return to Kii Katsuura for overnight.
Day 12 : Kii Katsuura > Kawayu Onsen
Take the bus to Hongu Taisha-mae and on to Hosshinmon-oji to walk a section of the Kumano Kodo Trail. Return to Kawayu Onsen for dinner and overnight.
Day 13 : Kawayu Onsen > Osaka
Take the bus and train to Osaka. This afternoon is at leisure.
Day 14 : Osaka
Transfer by regular scheduled airport bus to the airport.
