Bay of Kotor
This stunning bay is home to the medieval town of Kotor with its cobblestoned streets, lively piazzas, ancient churches and lively dining scene.

Budva
With great beaches and a lovely old walled town centre, spend some time exploring on foot, or take a day trip to the unique Sveti Stefan resort.

Perast
Although a small town, Perast is packed with wonderfully preserved Venetian and Baroque architecture.

Lake Skadar
This vast freshwater lake enjoys National Park status, and is a great place for taking time out to go hiking or wildlife spotting.

Ulcinj
One of the region’s oldest towns with a delightful town centre and a beautiful setting.

Enjoying a Mediterranean climate, Montenegro’s coast offers dry summers and mild but rainy winters. The more central and northern regions experience a more continental climate, with temperatures varying hugely with altitude. Montenegro can be visited all year round but the best months are April – June and September/October.

I only had a quick stopover in Montenegro from Croatia but managed to visit Kotor and Budva.

Kotor has a beautiful ‘medieval old town’ feel about it. It won’t take long for you to walk through its cute and compact streets, with lots of detail to take in and explore. Definitely do a walking tour with a local guide to learn more about history of this area. Once you’ve seen the streets, sit back and relax on a boat tour and take in the stunning scenery.

If you’re feeling fit enough, and you have good knees, (and it’s not 36°C heat), climb up to the old Kotor Fortress. It’s about 1350 steps (40-mins each way), with vast views of the town and across the Adriatic Sea. Best done first thing in the morning, before all the cruise line passengers descend.

Sitting in the quaint old streets, there is a plethora of restaurants with good ambiance, and outside they have those much-appreciated misty fans to enjoy an afternoon feast on all the delicious food and great hospitality in the summer sun!

Budva is more known for its sandy beaches, and the old town is surrounded by stone walls and cute narrow streets. Lots of history, culture and nightlife here. Try and find the Budva dancing girl statue “The goddess of love and loyalty” – makes for a beautiful photo with the stunning backdrop.

Why we love it With beautiful sun-dappled waters, stunning bays and history oozing out of every cobblestoned corner, Montenegro is a delight for both nature and history lovers.

Weather Montenegro is best visited during April and October – months which are generally dry and warm. July and August can be quite hot during the day but pleasant at night.

Festivals and events Held in the fortifications of Kotor, Bokeska Noc in the third week of August sees outdoor celebrations lasting through to the early morning. The Days of Wine and Fish in Virpazar on Skadar Lake is great fun – very local, very crowded, and lots of fish and wine!
