Introduction
Experience the profound beauty of the Broughton Archipelago and the Great Bear Rainforest at this family-run wilderness lodge.
Located between Vancouver Island and BC’s mainland on a secluded 10 acre old growth forest, Farewell Harbour Lodge offers guests intimate wildlife viewing excursions led by passionate and knowledgeable guides during the day, then delicious meals, and west coast lodge comforts in the evening. Witness orcas skip over the blue Pacific waves, humpback whales feed in their natural habitat, and mighty grizzlies forage in lush estuaries. Disconnect from the virtual world, reconnect with the natural world and experience the power of place at Farewell Harbour Lodge.
The primary lodge building and common area features a comfortable lounge and dining room, bar and a large brick fireplace surrounded by large windows and a wrap around deck boasting spectacular views of the harbour with its south and west exposure – and great sunsets. The expansive decks continue as a boardwalk along the shore, leading to eight private oceanside suites with en suite bathrooms, gas fired stove and extra-long double beds. A ramp leads off the main lodge to the floating lodge below, featuring four additional suites for twelve rooms in total. All lodge suites and common areas have unique design features incorporating natural cedar and local materials and art from the area that offer a distinctive, relaxing ‘west coast’ feel.
Itinerary
Day 1 : Vancouver > Port Hardy > Alder Bay > Farewell Harbour Lodge
Fly Vancouver to Port Hardy, then transfer by shuttle to Alder Bay. Depart Alder Bay aboard a high speed water taxi for the scenic 30 minute service to Farewell Harbour, where lodge staff will greet you at the dock for a welcome orientation and lunch. After settling into your accommodation, join an afternoon tour in search of marine wildlife in the waters of the famous Johnstone Strait and Robson Bight Ecological Reserve. Return to the lodge for a buffet dinner, followed by a briefing on the next day’s activity and a presentation on an aspect of coastal ecology.
Day 2 : Farewell Harbour Lodge
After breakfast, head to the dock for your full day bear viewing adventure to one of the main grizzly viewing estuaries. Bear viewing is at one of several estuaries where you view either from a Zodiac or on foot, depending on the tide. Viewing platforms are not used – the preference is to view wildlife at eye level in their natural habitat. Return to the lodge for another buffet dinner, followed by evening presentation on a topic such as the Great Bear Rainforest, bears, whales or First Nations culture.
Day 3 : Farewell Harbour Lodge
Head back out on the water after breakfast this morning for your choice of another bear viewing safari or a more extensive exploration of the incredibly rich waters of Johnstone Strait and the Robson Bight Ecological Reserve. Orcas typically return to these waters in the middle of July, although humpbacks and other marine life can often be seen from May through October. Return to the lodge for dinner and the evening programme.
Day 4 : Farewell Harbour Lodge > Alder Bay > Port Hardy > Vancouver
This morning you can choose from a variety of two hour excursions: another marine excursion, a sea kayak excursion, or a guided interpretive rainforest hike. Afterwards, return to the lodge for the water taxi back to Alder Bay. Transfer by shuttle to the Port Hardy Airport for your return flight to Vancouver, where arrangements end.
