Introduction
Discover the history, culture and wildlife of Greenland in this adventure commencing in Copenhagen.
Combine 4-star hotel comfort in Ilulissat with an off-the-beaten-track stay at Glacier Lodge Eqi before we round off with an amazing full-day adventure to a secluded glacier edge south of the quaint settlement of Ilimanaq.
Itinerary
Day 1 : Copenhagen > Kangerlassuaq > Ilulissat
Fly from Copenhagen to Kangerlassuaq and connect through to Ilulissat. On arrival you will be met and transferred to your hotel. After check-in meet your guide at the World of Greenland centre for your walking tour of the city. Explore the town’s history, Greenlandic culture, and modern life 300 km north of the Arctic Circle. We stop at several places along the way and say hello to the fishermen at the harbour and the hunters at “brættet.” We pass the famous polar explorer Knud Rasmussen’s birthplace and the old wooden Zion church.
Enjoy a welcome dinner in the hotel this evening before heading out on an Iceberg cruise. More than 48 km3 of ice flows into the fjord in one year. The result is gigantic icebergs, more than 100 metres wide and more than 100 metres above the water surface. These giants stand at the fjord’s end, allowing us to sail among them. The icebergs are Ilulissat’s icon, and sailing among them is an absolute must-do when visiting Ilulissat. An incredible natural experience.
Day 2 : Ilulissat
Join a Whale Safari this morning. It is usually the humpback whale, minke whale, and the fin whale we see in the summer. Despite its up to 18 metres and 30 tonnes, the humpback whale is the acrobat among the great whales. It can throw itself out of the water and is easily recognized by its humped fin and white back on the tail when it dives. Around Disko Bay, there are good opportunities to watch humpback whales hunt for fish, squid, and krill.
This afternoon walk to Sermermuit Settlement. Beautiful icebergs set the scene for the old settlement of Sermermiut, located a short walk south of Ilulissat. Different Inuit cultures have lived in this settlement for 4,000 years, and today you can still see remains that indicate their presence. Your guide will take you back through the Inuit people’s life and traditions before the Europeans came to Greenland. See turf hut ruins and touch the permafrost with your own hands. The area is so outstanding that UNESCO named it a World Heritage Site in 2004.
Day 3 : Ilulissat > Eqi Glacier
Transfer by boat to Eqi this morning. Only in very few places in Greenland will you experience a sight as impressive as the Eqi Glacier. It runs into a fjord approximately 80 km north of Ilulissat. The glacier calves so often that most people who pass by will experience this unique phenomenon’s sound and sight. Accessible only by boat, your accommodation is in a cosy eco cabin with a formidable view of the Eqi Glacier on the other side of the fjord.
Day 4 : Eqi
At leisure to explore this extraordinary area independently.
Day 5 : Eqi > Ilulissat
Check out this morning and join a Glacier Hike before the boat trip back to Ilulissat. Walk past the lagoon and onto the moraine, from where you can view the fantastic glacier. Coffee and tea will be served on the hike. It is about an 8 km walk in mountain terrain.
Day 6 : Ilulissat
On this trip, we sail south of Ilimanaq to Itilliup Ilua. We are dropped off on the wide sandy beach, where we drive in off-road vehicles through the Arctic tundra until we reach the Tasiusaq Fjord system. From here, we sail further deep in between the icebergs to the end of the fjord, where the two glaciers and the ice sheet come into view. Go ashore for a packed lunch and take a walk on the enormous ice sheet. NB: As the terrain may be uneven, we do not recommend this day-trip if you have severe back or neck issues. The trip departs from Ilimanaq and ends in Ilimanaq. A shuttle boat returns you to Ilulissat.
Day 7 : Ilulissat
At leisure to explore independently.
Day 8 : Ilulissat > Kangerlussuaq > Copenhagen
Transfer to the airport for the return flight to Copenhagen via Kangerlassuaq.
