Parc de Volcans
The lodges are situated a few minutes from the main entrance to the National Park where there are eight families of gorilla living on the slopes of the Virunga Volcanoes that you can trek to see. In addition, optional activities include trekking to see the golden monkeys, escorted walks and mountain biking, and a trek to the Dian Fossey Research Camp.

Akagera National Park
Located in the far east of Rwanda over looking beautiful Lake Rwanyakazinga, it comprises some of the most scenic savannah in East Africa. Open plains, woodlands, lakes and grassy low mountains, the park teems with game.

Lake Kivu
One of the African Great Lakes and the largest in Rwanda, it is also the sixth largest lake in Africa. Lake Kivu’s emerald green waters are surrounded by mountains, part of Africa’s Rift Valley covering a surface area of 2,700 km2.

Nyungwe Forest
One of the oldest rain forests in Africa and rich in biodiversity this mountainous region is home to a huge amount of wildlife where visitors can enjoy guided chimpanzees tracking. The forest is also home to 12 other species of primate, including the L’Hoest’s monkey endemic to the Albertine Rift.

Kigali City
Pretty tree lined streets and immaculate squares, Kigali is a safe city to stroll with friendly locals happy to help where needed. No visit is complete without visiting the Kigali Genocide Memorial which honours the memory of the more than one million Rwandans killed in 1994.

Rwanda can be visited at any time of year with the dry season from May to October. It rains more frequently and heavily in the northeast, where the volcanoes are covered by dense rainforest.

After a hike of what can be several hours, you are finally encountered by a gorilla family. Words cannot adequately describe the awe of seeing these magnificent creatures up close. The silverback, with his imposing presence, watches over the group while the younger gorillas play and interact with each other. Observing their behaviours and expressions is a deeply moving experience, highlighting the profound similarities between ourselves and our closest relatives in the animal kingdom.

The Volcanoes National Park itself is a stunning backdrop to this adventure. The chain of dormant volcanoes, shrouded in mist, add an element of mystique to the landscape. Language The national language is Kinyarwanda, but the majority of Rwandans speak at least one international language. People in the tourism industry, will usually be able to speak French and English.

Why we love it A visit to Rwanda is not complete without tracking the famous mountain gorillas, but though this is an undeniably wonderful experience there is a great deal more to the country and it is well worth spending a few extra days to experience it all. A couple of days of gorilla tracking is ideal and can easily be combined with some time in Kigali, relaxing along the shores of Lake Kivu or chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe Forest.

Weather There is little fluctuation in temperature throughout the year, with daytime temperatures between 25C and 30C. The “long rains” last from mid-February to early June whilst the “short rains” last from mid-September to mid-December. The rainfall is heaviest from March to May, especially over the mountains.
