Eger: Best known for its medieval castles and thermal baths, it’s also a popular wine-making region and is renowned for red wines.
Hortobágy National Park: this UNESCO heritage site offers stunning landscapes consisting of vast areas of plains and wetlands. Explore the unique fauna and rich culture and folklore of this region. When the skies are clear, this area is also well known for its stargazing opportunities.
Lake Balaton: A short train ride from Budapest will take you here in less than 50 minutes. Considered the largest lake in Central Europe, Lake Balaton is also a major holiday destination and where locals go on hikes and enjoy many outdoor activities.
Hungary is a year-round destination, but we recommend visiting during spring (April – May) or autumn (September – October) when temperatures are ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities. Winter (December – February) features Christmas markets and snow-covered streets decorated with lights.
Currency
The Hungarian Forint (HUF). Card payments are accepted in most places with cash preferred in smaller towns.
Language
The main language spoken is Hungarian. You may find English speakers in most major cities and touristic areas.
Weather
Hungary experiences pleasant spring (April – May) and autumn (September – October) weather, ideal for outdoor activities. Summers (June-August) are hot and humid, perfect for water activities, while winters (December-February) offer cold, snowy conditions ideal for skiing or enjoying local markets and performances.
Social customs and quirks
Hungarians are passionate about food and enjoy sharing meals with friends and family. Make sure to sample traditional Hungarian dishes like goulash, chicken paprikash, and chimney cake. Communication can seldom be seen as direct but most locals are also known for their warm hospitality and welcoming nature.
Festivals and events
Wine festivals happen in different regions around the country during the summer (June – September). Sziget Festival and the Gellert Hill Fireworks Festival are also popular celebrations around August.

Tipping is customary in restaurants and bars.
