Introduction
Costa Rica is a nature lover’s paradise, and this is the ideal tour for active guests wanting to see as much as possible.
Hike beautiful trails, white water raft on the Pacuare River and snorkel the warm Caribbean waters of the Cahuita National Park, where monkeys, sloths and colourful frogs are common sights above the waterline. Visit the Arenal Volcano National Park, and end your visit with relaxation on a beautiful beach on the glorious Gulf of Papagayo.
This itinerary can be tailor-made, with the number of days, places visited, and activities varied to suit you.
Itinerary
Day 1 : San Jose
Transfer to your hotel on arrival.
Day 2 : San Jose > Pacuare River
Depart San Jose by road to the Pacuare River. Enjoy some thrilling white-water rafting through canyons where crystal-clear waterfalls cascade and spot a variety exotic animals and colourful birds, including rare and endangered species.
Day 3 : Pacuare River > Puerto Viejo de Limon
Enjoy a second even more thrilling day on the river and use the skills and experience gained yesterday. Explore waterfalls and a have fun on a natural waterslide. After lunch continue onto Puerto Viejo de Limon, a region offering a mix of beaches, rainforest, culture and some excellent Afro-Caribbean food.
Day 4 : Cahuita National Park
Visit Cahuita National Park, home to colourful coral reefs and hiking trails that are fantastic for spotting birds and wildlife. Snorkel at Punta Cahuita, and later enjoy a guided rainforest hike to see monkeys, tree sloths, various reptiles, colourful frogs and some amazing insects.
Day 5 : Puerto Viejo de Limon > Tortuguero National Park
Today you will journey to Costa Rica’s northern Caribbean, starting with a scenic drive through Guapiles. A tranquil boat ride awaits, guiding you through Tortuguero’s intricate channels for over an hour, surrounded by a lush rainforest teeming with diverse flora and fauna, including birds, reptiles, and playful monkeys. At the lodge, a brief orientation sets the stage for upcoming activities. Later, explore Tortuguero village, where bicycles rule as the primary mode of transport in this tourism-centred community, offering insights into local life.
Learn about vital conservation efforts protecting the Caribbean green, leatherback, and hawksbill turtles and their nesting sites, vital sanctuaries for these magnificent creatures. If visiting between July and September, opt for a night excursion (additional cost) with the lodge. Witness the breathtaking sight of turtles returning to lay eggs along the safeguarded 22-kilometre beach, culminating their incredible journey through the Caribbean Sea.
Day 6 : Tortuguero National Park
A day of wildlife spotting in Tortuguero National Park with its enormous biodiversity, offering visitors multiple species of trees and plants and over 405 bird species, many of which are viewed during your boat trip. Mammals which also may be spotted include the white-faced and howler monkeys, three-toed sloths and with luck, endangered species such as the jaguar, ocelot and tapir. There are also common sightings of crocodile, turtles and freshwater fish which always ensures Tortuguero provides a truly unforgettable experience.
Day 7 : Tortuguero National Park > Arenal Volcano
By mid-morning, you will set off, gliding through the local canals once more, relishing in their biodiversity. Your journey then leads you by road to Guapiles for a delightful lunch, marking the start of your venture toward Costa Rica’s northern plains. This route treats you to breathtaking vistas and quaint rural towns, culminating in La Fortuna de San Carlos. Weather permitting, you will witness one of the country’s most astounding natural spectacles: the awe-inspiring Arenal Volcano. Its near-perfect volcanic cone majestically welcomes you to the region, promising a remarkable sight.
Day 8 : Arenal Volcano
Spend your morning indulging in optional tourist attractions (additional cost) near the magnificent Arenal Volcano. Later in the evening, immerse yourself in the breathtaking Hot Springs—an awe-inspiring natural wonder. Here, a river of hot water courses through a series of pools and streams, offering temperatures ranging from 25 to 50C. These thermal waters, heated by the Earth’s magma, carry minerals from the rocky crust, offering a rejuvenating experience. Relax and unwind in this serene setting before relishing a delicious local dinner at the Hot Springs restaurant, concluding the day before returning to your hotel.
Day 9 : Arenal Volcano
Today offers the perfect opportunity to bask in the hotel’s amenities, but for those seeking adventure, we suggest the Sky Tram & Sky Trek experience. Ascend the mountain via the Sky Tram, soaking in stunning views of Arenal Lake. Then, embrace the thrill as you traverse cables, descending from one peak to another on pulleys—an exhilarating adventure that will make your heart race. If a serene exploration of the northern plains is more your style, opt for the Arenal Hanging Bridges tour. Wander along 16 suspended bridges nestled in the rainforest. These trails cater to all visitors, ensuring safety while offering an immersive experience. Along the way, marvel at the majestic Arenal Volcano and encounter a diverse array of wildlife—mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, and insects. It is a rewarding journey, presenting one of the most enriching encounters in the region.
Day 10 : Arenal Volcano > Gulf of Papagayo
Head to the beautiful Pacific coast of Costa Rica, for three nights at your hotel on the Gulf of Papagayo.
Days 11 & 12 : Gulf of Papagayo
Days at leisure for you to enjoy the hotel facilities and surrounding areas. The region is known for its extensive nature reserves, which house an incredible concentration of flora, fauna and natural beauty. In this area are several nature reserves and many optional activities that can be enjoyed from this area – at additional cost.
Some suggestions are Rincón de la Vieja National Park, which holds an active volcano and thermal mud baths; Palo Verde National Park, which is a bird-watchers and nature-lover’s paradise, and some more adventurous activities like canopy tours, river rafting, horseback riding, hiking and much more!
Day 13 : Gulf of Papagayo > San Jose
This morning you will transferred back to San Jose and be dropped the airport for your departure flight and the end of your Costa Rican Adventure.
