Explore the treasures of several UNESCO World Heritage sites including Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura, Dambulla and the old town of Galle with its fortifications.
Visit world-renowned tea plantations and fragrant spice gardens, enjoy delicious cuisine, and spot elephants, leopards, sloth bears, crocodiles and more in Yala National Park.
Itinerary
Day 1 : Colombo > Negombo
On arrival you will be met and transferred to your hotel in Negombo.
Day 2 : Negombo> Sigiriya > Kandalama
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before travelling northeast to Kandalama where you will enjoy the day at leisure. You can join a tour to the local village to catch a glimpse of a farmer’s life and culture.
Trekking through the Hiriwaduna is an adventure that gets every nature lover excited! You can ride a Bullock cart – Sri Lanka’s oldest form of transportation on an unpaved trail. Then set off on a nature walk through a scrub jungle.
Day 3 : Kandalama > Sigiriya > Polonnaruwa > Kandalama
After breakfast, visit the Historial UNESCO Siririya Rock Fortress. The climb will reward you with magnificent views from the rock summit. Continue to a converted farmhouse for a cooking demonstration and lunch, and this afternoon visit the medieval city of Polonnaruwa, founded in the 11th century AD and governed by many kings.
Day 4 : Kandalama > Anuradhapura > Kandalama
Visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Anuradhapura, the centre of the island’s Buddhist civilization. See Sri Maha Bodhi, the oldest documented tree on earth, and said to be an “off-shoot” of the tree in India under which Buddha attained enlightenment. there are many other important shrines and monuments that give Anuradhapura its significant status as the first kingdom. Return to your hotel late afternoon.
Day 5 : Kandamala > Dambulla > Matale > Kandy
Today your will wisit Dambulla rock cave temple, a complex of 5 caves, before travelling to Kandy via the Matale Spice Garden. There you will learn about the popular and exotic spices that are so readily used in Sri Lankan cuisines and ayurvedic treatments.
You will also have the opportunity to try some Sri Lankan cuisine using the popular spices, have a healing massage, purchase medicinal and cosmetic products created using the natural spices (at own cost).
Continue to Kandy and visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth on arrival.
Day 6 : Kandy
Visit the Royal Botanical Garden in Peradeniya this morning. The garden is renowned for its collection of over 300 varieties of orchids, spices, medicinal plants and palm trees. Enjoy the rest of the day at leisure.
Day 7 : Kandy > Nuwara Eliya > Ella
This morning, drive to Nuwara Eliya, in the heart of the highlands. En route visit a traditional tea factory where you will sample a variety of tea. Board the train for the 2.5 hour journey to Ella, enjoying the magnificent scenery along the way.
Day 8 : Ella
Optional morning hike to Little Adams Peak. Alternatively, you can take a short walk of 45min – 1 hour. Along the walk you will be surrounded by lush green landscapes and hillsides including tea plantations.
In the afternoon, explore the countryside, visiting Nine Arche Bridge and Ravana Waterfalls. Return to your hotel for an evening at leisure.
Day 9 & 10 : Ella > Yala
After breakfast you will be transferred to Yala. On the next two days, enjoy game drive viewing activities in the Yala National Park.
Yala National Park is home to wildlife such as the elephant, sloth bear, leopard and crocodile. Vegetation is primarily grassland and shrub jungle with patches of dense growth while several salt and fresh water lagoons are a haven for a large variety of resident and migrant birds.
Day 11 : Yala > Galle
Drive to Galle in the morning and explore the area on foot, including Galle Fort, with your guide. Survey the inside of this remarkable fortification, the Indian Ocean beyond and iconic cricket ground as your host regales you with historic tales of its creation and threats.
Day 12 : Galle
Enjoy your day at leisure.
Day 13 : Galle > Colombo
After a late breakfast, transfer to Colombo. Later this afternoon enjoy a walking tour of the city.
Day 14 : Depart Colombo
After breakfast, transfer to the airport where arrangements end.
