Introduction
Sitting on the edge of the Hudson Bay, built on deep Indigenous roots and home to Canada’s most iconic wildlife, the town of Churchill is a must-visit destination for those who seek an authentic Canadian adventure.
Have the best of both worlds: experience the northern frontier town of Churchill and the wonderful wildlife surrounding it! This hotel-based adventure offers the excitement of polar bear viewing from a Tundra Buggy, and the opportunity to take in the eclectic charm of this remote northern town.
This adventure includes two full-day Tundra Buggy safaris in the Churchill Wildlife Management Area, where polar bears await the freezing of the Hudson Bay. You will have plenty of opportunity to explore the Churchill Wildlife Management Area for these majestic mammals and other subarctic wildlife in their natural environment.
Itinerary
Day 1 : Winnipeg
Upon arrival into Winnipeg, make your own way to your accommodation. This evening there is a meet and greet hosted by your interpretive guide.
Day 2 : Winnipeg > Churchill
Depart on an early morning flight to Churchill. Upon arrival, head straight out on a Churchill and area tour, which comprises of an exploratory drive past various points of interest in and surrounding Churchill. Your driver will stop briefly at Manitoba Conservation Polar Bear Holding Facility where there is an opportunity to take photos. Enjoy a home-cooked lunch at one of Churchill’s family-run restaurants.
After lunch stop at Polar Bears International House for a talk from a Polar Bears International Ambassador about polar bears, polar bear research, and climate change. Also stop at the Interpretive Centre and learn how to support polar bear conservation efforts. Next up is the Parks Canada Visitor Centre to see in-depth displays that reveal the remarkable history of Churchill through wildlife dioramas and exhibits that portray the history of the fur trade in the area.
Then head to the hotel for a chance to freshen up before enjoying a wonderful dinner with your group and Interpretive Guide.
Day 3 : Churchill
After breakfast you will be picked up your hotel and transferred out to the Tundra Buggy Dock and the Tundra Buggy. After a safety speech from the Tundra Buggy Driver, it’s time to hit the trails and travel into the Churchill Wildlife Management Area (CWMA). The Tundra Buggy Driver navigates the bumpy trails of the CWMA in search of polar bears and other subarctic wildlife while the Interpretive Guide shares interesting facts about the area’s geology and history. Enjoy a delicious picnic lunch right on the Tundra Buggy while watching and photographing wildlife.
At the end of an incredible first day on the tundra, return to town for a warm dinner with the group, a great opportunity to share photos and swap stories. After dinner enjoy a cultural presentation by a local trapper who shares this way of life in the north through the four distinct and beautiful seasons of Churchill.
Day 4 : Churchill
Your second day in Churchill is all about northern culture with the first excursion of the day being a dog sledding program with a local dog musher of Wapusk Adventures. They will regale tales of incredible dog sledding stories, introducing their dog pack before taking the group on a a mile-long dog sled ride through the boreal forest.
After lunch head over to the Itsanitaq Museum, which is home to an enormous collection of Inuit artifacts honouring Indigenous culture and history, a great chance to learn more about northern culture and to feel a connection to Churchill’s community.
Day 5 : Churchill > Winnipeg
After breakfast you will be collected from your hotel and transferred to the Tundra Buggy Dock. It is another great day on the tundra, full of extraordinary wildlife and photography opportunities and time to enjoy a light lunch on the Tundra Buggy.
Transfer back to Churchill airport for your return flight to Winnipeg. Upon arrival in Winnipeg check back into your hotel for the night.
Day 6 : Depart Winnipeg
Depart Winnipeg at your leisure.
