Introduction
Explore the mighty Amazon on foot and on the river.
In Cuzco, stay in a colonial mansion dating from the 16th Century and once occupied by the first conquistadors from Spain. Highlights will include the iconic Belmond Hiram Bingham train from Machu Picchu and the luxury Peruvian Highlands sleeper train from Cuzco to Lake Titicaca and onto the delightful ‘White City’ of Arequipa. Itinerary
Day 1 : Arequipa
On arrival transfer to your hotel in Arequipa.
Day 2 : Arequipa
Enjoy a half-day tour of this very picturesque city, including a visit to the wonderfully restored Santa Catalina Convent which dates from 1579. Visit markets, and marvel at the beautiful cathedral on the lovely main square.
Day 3 : Arequipa
Today is at leisure to further explore the sights of this charming town.
Day 4 : Arequipa > Puno, Lake Titicaca
This morning board the luxurious Belmond Andean Explorer train for your journey to Puno and Lake Titicaca, enjoying wonderful cuisine and well-appointed cabins. Disembark en route to tour the Sumbay Caves. The scenery is wonderful and is complimented by the entertainment provided on board. Enjoy cocktails and canapes followed by a delicious dinner. Spend overnight aboard the train in Puno.
Day 5 : Puno, Lake Titicaca > Marangani
After an early breakfast, visit to the unique floating islands of Uros, where you’ll discover the fascinating culture of the indigenous people who have built and maintained these reed islands for generations. Next, enjoy a traditional lunch on the island of Taquile, known for its vibrant weaving culture. Afterwards, visit the tranquil beach of Collata, offering stunning views of Lake Titicaca and an opportunity to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the region. Spend overnight onboard the train in Marangani.
Day 6 : Marangani > Cuzco > Sacred Valley
This morning depart for Cuzco, stopping en route at the fascinating archaeological site of Raqchi. Arrive at Cuzco after brunch and transfer some 90 minutes to a lower altitude in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, making the altitude adjustment much more comfortable. Stay two nights in an idyllic setting, your base to explore the many surrounding Inca ruins and picturesque towns.
Day 7 : Sacred Valley
Enjoy a full-day private sightseeing tour of the Sacred Valley. Your first stop will be Maras, an amazing collection of over 3,000 salt extraction ponds dating back over 2000 years. Then visit the incredible site of Moray with impressive circular terracing that was in Inca times an agricultural experiment. After a delicious lunch during which you also enjoy a traditional Peruvian Paso horse show, explore the hillside fortress ruins of Ollantaytambo, the scene of the last great battle between the Inca armies and Spanish conquistadors in January 1537.
Day 8 : Sacred Valley > Machu Picchu
This morning you will embark on a captivating 90-minute voyage aboard the opulent Belmond Hiram Bingham train to reach the majestic Machu Picchu. Upon arrival, enjoy lunch at the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge then immerse yourself in a guided exploration of these awe-inspiring ruins. As the day ends, unwind and indulge in the comforts of your luxurious 5-star hotel nestled in Aguas Calientes, ensuring a restful and rejuvenating overnight stay amidst the enchanting surroundings.
Day 9 : Machu Picchu > Sacred Valley > Cuzco
Indulge in a leisurely morning, embracing relaxation or opting for one of the hotel’s curated guided tours. Afterwards, browse in the vibrant markets of Aguas Calientes, brimming with local culture and artisanal treasures. As the afternoon unfolds, embark on Peru Rail’s Vistadome train for a picturesque journey to the Sacred Valley. Upon arrival, transfer back to Cuzco to the exquisite Aranwa Hotel housed within a meticulously restored 16th-century mansion.
Day 10 : Cuzco
Enjoy a half-day tour of Cusco offers a blend of history, culture, and art, showcasing the harmonious coexistence of Andean and Spanish influences. You will explore the bustling San Pedro Market, designed by Gustave Eiffel in 1925, where locals sell a variety of goods. Next, visit the Koricancha temple (closed on Sunday mornings), once the Inca empire’s centre of Sun worship, later transformed into the Santo Domingo convent. Ascending to the impressive Sacsayhuaman fortress, admire its massive stone walls, a prime example of Inca military architecture. You will also tour Kenko, a ceremonial site dedicated to the worship of the sun, moon, and stars. Finally, visit the Cathedral, built atop the Inca palace, housing a remarkable collection of colonial art.
Day 11 : Cuzco > Puerto Maldonado > Peruvian Amazon
This morning after breakfast transfer to the airport and fly to the jungle airport at Puerto Maldonado. Transfer by boat on the Madre de Dios River to your very comfortable jungle lodge, your home for the next three nights. In the afternoon begin sightseeing with your expert naturalist guide.
Days 12 & 13 : Peruvian Amazon
Spend the next two days and nights discovering the wonders of Amazonia. Partake in a wide range of activities including jungle and canopy walks, river trips, bird watching, night walks and piranha fishing expeditions. Your small group will have both a native Indian guide and an English-speaking naturalist, who between them will reveal the incredible diversity of flora and fauna found here.
Day 14 : Peruvian Amazon > Puerto Maldonado > Lima
Today after breakfast transfer back to Puerto Maldonado then fly to Lima. On arrival transfer to your hotel.
Day 15 : Lima
Enjoy a full-day city tour, exploring the historical centre with its impressive Presidential Palace and colonial buildings. See the Inca pyramid of Huaca Hullamarca and visit the Santo Domingo convent where you will have the chance to explore the catacombs. Later in the day visit the magnificent Larco Herrera Museum, home to a fantastic collection of Inca and Pre-Inca artefacts and weavings. Enjoy lunch in the excellent restaurant on site.
Day 16 : Lima
After breakfast this morning transfer to the airport for your onward travels.
