Day 1: Lima Arrive in Lima and transfer to the luxury Belmond Miraflores Park Hotel, located in the stylish suburb of Miraflores.

Day 2: Lima Enjoy a morning city tour of colonial and modern Lima, including a visit to the impressive pre-Inca adobe pyramid of Huaca Huallamarca. You will also explore the historic heart of the city, where the Presidential Palace and impressive colonial buildings surround the main square. Visit the wonderful Santo Domingo Convent, which dates back almost to the time of the conquistadors, and take the opportunity to explore the catacombs. Next, visit the excellent Larco Herrera Museum where you will enjoy lunch at the excellent restaurant on site. This museum, one of the best in Latin America, will provide you with an excellent insight into the Inca world you are about to visit. The impressive collection of over 45,000 artefacts will inspire and help you to understand the history of Peru in ancient Inca times.

Day 3: Lima > Cuzco > Sacred Valley Today you will fly to Cuzco and then travel by car to the Sacred Valley of the Incas via the colourful Pisac Market. On the way, stop and learn about the Andean members of the camelid family, including llamas, alpacas and vicunas, and hand feed them if you wish. After some time at the market, continue to the Belmond Hotel Rio Sagrado, a luxury haven located in the heart of the beautiful Sacred Valley, your home for the next two nights. This area is some 800 metres lower than Cuzco and spending your first nights here significantly aids acclimatization to altitude.

Day 4: Sacred Valley Today's private tour includes several great highlights of the area. The first stop will be Maras, an amazing collection of over 3,000 salt ponds where the local Indians have been extracting this precious commodity since well before Inca times. Continue to the intriguing Inca agricultural experiment at Maras, famous for its impressive circular terracing, a marvel of engineering. Enjoy a delicious lunch and a Peruvian Paso horse show before visiting the impressive fortress of Ollantaytambo, scene of one of the last great battles between the Inca and the Spanish conquistadors. Return late afternoon to your Sacred Valley hotel.

Day 5: Sacred Valley > Machu Picchu Take a scenic Vistadome train journey to Machu Picchu. On arrival enjoy a buffet lunch before a guided tour of the ruins. It was to Machu Picchu that the Inca royalty fled after the Spanish invasion, where they were never discovered by the conquistadors. Your guide will explain all about this magnificent historical gem allowing time for photographs before you return to the nearby town of Aguas Calientes for the night at a luxury award-winning hotel, set in a five-hectare garden.

Day 6: Machu Picchu > Cuzco There is time this morning for a second entry to Machu Picchu (at additional cost) or to explore the markets of Aguas Calientes. There is the option today to upgrade to the luxurious Belmond Hiram Bingham train when travelling back to Cuzco (additional cost applies).

Day 7: Cuzco Your private tour of Cuzco, also known as the Imperial City in Inca times, was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. You will start your tour at the Koricancha Temple, an ancient Inca palace and cult centre of the Sun God. The Dominicans built a church on top of the Inca temple, but there are still examples of the finest Inca stonework in Peru, including the walls of the old Temple which remains standing to this day.

Next, visit the Plaza de Armas, where you will see the Cathedral, the most important temple in the city. Continue ascending to the Fortress of Sacsayhuaman, an impressive example of Inca military architecture. Afterwards, you will visit Kenko, an archaeological site where the Sun, Moon and Stars were celebrated. Continue with a stop at Puca-Pucara, a place that would have served as "tambo" or resting place and lodging of the Inca. Finally, you will visit the art workshop Inka's Expression, where you will appreciate a sample of the various uses of Peruvian natural products (plants, fruits, vegetables, among others) and will learn about their nutritional, healing and cosmetic properties.
