Being offered the opportunity to travel through Central Asia onboard the Golden Eagle was a dream come true. When I walked through the train station and onto the platform and saw the friendly crew dressed in their royal blue uniforms greeting guests with trays of champagne – I knew I was in for a treat and a taste of what was to come.
Champagne in hand, I was escorted to my cabin which was well appointed plenty of storage and amenities, including a nice hot shower. After unpacking my suitcase was taken for storage in another carriage and I made my way to the most important part of the train – the bar carriage, the social hub of the train with comfortable lounge chairs and a well-stocked bar. It was here amongst my new-found travel companions that the level of excitement started to build.
A cheer rang out as the train pulled out of the platform – we were in high spirits in anticipation of what was going to be a memorable journey through the ‘Stans’. Golden Eagle Luxury Trains operate private trains across the landscapes of Europe, Central Asia and the Silk Road, combining first-class service with an ever-changing ‘room with a view’ through some of the world’s most awe-inspiring landmarks.
Onboard dining was a daily highlight, with beautifully presented meals served in exquisite dining carriages by friendly crew who were very clearly so proud to be working onboard the train. This began each morning as I pushed my call button. Magically my cabin attendant promptly delivered a morning cup of tea and croissant to tide me over before I headed to the dining carriage for actual breakfast – what a way to start the day!
Golden Eagle Luxury Trains
All-inclusive luxury, five-star service, delicious cuisine, and in-depth explorations…
this experience is the complete package.

Of course it’s not all about the onboard experience. I was here to explore some Stans! Off-train excursions were typically once or twice a day and well-managed by the train manager and local guides who had incredible in-depth knowledge.
Uzbekistan was everything I hoped it to be with stunning architecture, clean and friendly bazaars, and of course the elegant tiles and architecture of Registan Square, famous for its impressive mosques and schools – I can’t count how many photos I took!
As we crossed the border into Kyrgyzstan, I found myself glued to the window in awe of the spectacular scenery as we trundled alongside mountains and rivers, before arriving at Lake Issy-Kul. This stunning lake is recognised as being the second largest alpine lake in the world. Here we were treated to a captivating display of traditional sports and games which were been passed down through generations. The archery, horseback wrestling, and hunting with majestic Golden Eagles were fascinating, and having the opportunity to hold a Golden Eagle was unforgettable, being in the presence of such a stunning creature (which weighed 6 kg!).
Having explored by day, it was always a treat to return to the train each evening, looking forward to a delicious dinner and convivial company as we headed off to the next adventure. Each night the crew converted the cabin seating into a cosy bed complete with plush pillows and duvets. As we mostly travelled in the evening, the train’s gentle rocking from side to side induced the most wonderful sleeps.
Our journey came to an end as we crossed the border into Almaty in Kazakhstan (a country I would love to explore more in depth). I reluctantly farewelled my fellow travellers, many who are now friends for life, and vowed to return!
I can highly recommend the rail journeys of Golden Eagle Luxury Trains, particularly when travelling through destinations where the tourism infrastructure might not offer many options. Just like on a luxury cruise, you unpack once and wake up in an exciting new destination to explore each day, returning to the cosy comforts and delicious cuisine of your home-on-rails.
Golden Eagle Luxury Trains operate three trains – the Golden Eagle, the Danube Express and the Silk Road Express.
