Travel the route of the Incas from Cuzco to Puno and Lake Titicaca, believed to be the very birthplace of the Aymara Indians, founders of the Inca Empire. Begin in Lima - capital of Peru and once the most important city in the Americas under Spanish colonial rule. Continue to the imperial city of Cuzco to visit important ruins, temples and the Sacred Valley of the Incas before the main event, the Lost City of Machu Picchu. Travel across the altiplano to Puno, visiting the traditional floating reed islands of the Uros Indians before continuing your journey across beautiful Lake Titicaca to La Paz, highest capital city in the world.
Day 1: Arrive Lima You will be met and transferred to your hotel.
Day 2: Lima This morning you will enjoy a sightseeing tour of the old colonial heart of Lima which in Spanish colonial times was the most important city in South America. Modern Lima is also included.
Day 3: Lima > Cuzco Transfer to the airport and fly to Cuzco. On arrival you will be transferred to your hotel.
Day 4: Cuzco City tour including the ancient Inca Temple of the Sun (Koricancha), the magnificent cathedral and the Inca fortress of Sacsayhuaman which offers great views back down over the town.
Day 5: Cuzco > Sacred Valley Leaving Cuzco enjoy sightseeing today in the beautiful Sacred Valley of the Incas. Visit the famous Pisac Market. Afterwards, see the impressive Inca fortress at Ollantaytambo where one of the final battles between the declining Inca empire and the Spanish Conquistadores took place. You will spend the evening at a hotel in the Sacred Valley.
Day 6: Sacred Valley > Machu Picchu Travel by scenic train some 90 minutes to the ruins of Machu Picchu. Enjoy a guided tour of the ruins followed by lunch and more time to explore the 'Lost City of the Incas' at your own pace. Overnight in the nearby town with dinner included.
Day 7: Machu Picchu > Cuzco This morning there is time to revisit the citadel ruins (at additional cost) or explore the markets at Aguas Calientes before taking the afternoon train back to Cuzco.
Day 8: Cuzco > Puno Today enjoy a full day bus journey with some interesting stops at villages and Inca ruins along the way. The scenery is superb as you head to Lake Titicaca.
Day 9: Puno Today visit the floating Uros Islands situated on the lake. The local people have lived on these islands for centuries.
Day 10: Puno > Lake Titicaca An early start and a fascinating drive along the shoreline of the lake takes you to the Bolivian border and soon after, the charming town of Copacabana. Here you board a catamaran and cruise the lake to the beautiful Island of the Sun. Sightseeing at two different points on this island and overnight on board.
Day 11: Lake Titicaca > La Paz A lovely cruise to the far end of the lake where you join a coach to La Paz, arriving there early evening.
Day 12: La Paz Enjoy a sightseeing tour of this most 'Indian' of South American capital cities including a visit to the Witches Market and Valley of the Moon.
Day 13: Depart La Paz Private transfer to the airport for your departure.
