Day 1: Vancouver > Kamloops (Train) Just minutes from downtown Vancouver board the Rocky Mountaineer train. Pass through the rich fields of the Fraser River Valley and the towering peaks of the Coastal Mountains before entering the Fraser Canyon. Follow the Thompson River through spectacular landscapes to historic Kamloops.

Breakfast and lunch will be served onboard the train

Day 2: Kamloops > Jasper (Train) Back on board the Rocky Mountaineer follow the Thompson River through rolling plateaus to the snowy peaks of the Monashee Mountains. View Pyramid Falls and the expansive glaciers of the Albreda Icefields. Pass by Mount Robson, which at 3954 metres is the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies. Upon arrival into Jasper, collect your rental vehicle (not included) and proceed to your selected hotel.

Day 3: Jasper Explore this charming mountain village which is close to many terrific scenic highlights. Take a tram ride up Whistlers Mountain, or visit Maligne Lake, one of the most photographed lakes in the world, and enjoy a 90-minute cruise heading toward the south end of this postcard setting (not included). You will marvel at the magnificent shoreline with dense forest and glacial peaks rising abruptly from the water's edge. Stopping at Spirit Island, you will have the opportunity to take your own version of the world famous photograph of the lake.

Day 4: Jasper > Lake Louise (208 km) This morning depart on the scenic drive that takes you through the spine of the Canadian Rockies. You view a never-ending procession of mammoth mountains, jagged peaks, over 100 glaciers and pristine emerald coloured lakes. Along the way see such sights as the Columbia Icefield and take an Ice Explorer ride out onto the glacier (included). Also watch for the Sarbach Glacier, Peyto Lake, Bow Lake, with the Bow Glacier providing the backdrop, and Crowfoot Glacier before your arrival into Lake Louise. (Please note: Mountain lakes in this region will be frozen through to mid-June).

Day 5: Lake Louise > Banff (62 km) Take the short drive from Lake Louise to Banff. Choose the Bow Valley Parkway, beside the Bow River with an option for you to take a stop at Johnston Canyon and walk along the paved footpath to either the lower or upper waterfalls before continuing to Banff. This afternoon explore Banff and the surrounding area. In town you'll find lots of excitement including shopping, cafés, nightlife and museums.

Day 6: Banff Sightseeing (Banff Gondola) A full day to explore Banff. Check out the Cave and Basin National Historic Site (not included) and Banff Gondola (included) where you will see a panoramic view of the Bow Valley, and then take a dip in the hot mineral pools at the Upper Hot Springs (included).

Day 7: Banff > Calgary (115 km) Drive to Calgary today, along the 1A Highway. En-route, you may wish to stop at the historic Cochrane Ranch (not included) before dropping off your rental car at the Calgary International Airport or downtown location.

Reverse Itinerary

Day 1: Calgary > Banff (115 km) Upon arrival into Calgary, pick up your rental car and begin your Rockies adventure. Take the short (2-hour) drive from Calgary to Banff on the Trans-Canada Highway or the more scenic 1A Highway. Once in Banff proceed to your hotel to check in. The remainder of the day is yours to explore at your own leisure.

Day 2: Banff Sightseeing (Banff Gondola) A full day to explore Banff and the surrounding area. In town you'll find lots of excitement including shopping, cafés, nightlife and museums. Day 3: Banff > Lake Louise (62 km) Depart Banff today and travel along the lovely Bow Valley Parkway for a casual drive. The Bow Valley Parkway between Banff and Lake Louise is a low-speed, two-lane undivided roadway with numerous scenic outlooks and pullouts. Be sure to stop for a quick nature walk at Johnston Canyon, where you can stand in the spray of a roaring mountain waterfall. Continue on to the "Jewel of the Rockies," Lake Louise. Lake Louise is the most famous glacial lake in the Canadian Rockies, and one of the most beautiful in the Western Hemisphere.

Overnight at: 3 1/2 Star: Deer Lodge - Heritage Room 4 Star: Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise - Deluxe Lakeview Room

Day 4: Lake Louise > Jasper (208 km) Today, travel through the spine of the Canadian Rockies along the amazing Icefields Parkway. You're sure to be enthralled by the scenery, wildlife, incredible blue lakes and sparkling waterfalls en route (Please note: Mountain lakes in this region will be frozen through to mid-June). A stop at Peyto Lake along the way is a must. Don't miss the Columbia Icefield for a ride onto the Athabasca Glacier on board an Ice Explorer (included) before continuing your journey to Jasper.

Day 6: Jasper > Kamloops (Train) All aboard Rocky Mountaineer for a scenic rail journey to Kamloops in the interior of British Columbia. Leaving Jasper National Park, travel the 'Yellowhead' Route past the sprawling grandeur of Mount Robson, 'the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies' and follow the mighty Thompson River, the route of early fur traders, before arriving in Kamloops.

Day 7: Kamloops > Vancouver (Train) Leaving Kamloops, follow the Thompson River through Ashcroft, one of Canada's driest towns, with an average rainfall of just 18 centimetres. Pass through Rainbow Canyon named for its cliffs striped with pinks, greens and greys creating a stunning rainbow affect. Continue on to the Fraser Canyon, where at Hells Gate watch water torrent past the canyon walls at its narrowest point. The last leg of the journey takes you through the fertile farming region of the Fraser Valley to arrive in the Pacific port of Vancouver late afternoon.
