Temples, Tigers & the Ganges
India boasts a profusion of colours, chaos, sights, sounds and smells that will assault your senses on every level. Begin in Delhi the capital city dotted with relics of lost empires. Nothing will prepare you for your first glimpse of the Taj Mahal at sunrise. On to the Pink City of Jaipur and Ranthambhore National Park famed for its tigers. Continue on to Kolkata for a cruise gliding along the Ganges River, you'll get a glimpse into daily life on the river as well as in remote towns. An essential Indian experience second to none.
On this journey you will enjoy the following special experiences: • Rickshaw ride through the streets of Old Delhi See the local markets operating as they have for centuries and marvel at your driver's ability to manoeuvre in the tiny streets teeming with people and traffic.
• Make like a local and see a Bollywood movie. Join the locals at a well-known cinema in Jaipur and enjoy the spectacle that is Bollywood. You may even find the audience joining in the fun by dancing.
• Cooking class to learn a tasty Indian dish Try your hand at preparing staple Indian dishes under the watchful eye of your chef. Conclude the lesson by sampling the fruits of your labour.

Day 1: Auckland > Singapore Evening flight to Singapore. Transit to our onward flight.
Day 2: Singapore > Delhi Arrive Delhi in the morning and transfer to our hotel. The day is at leisure to relax.
Day 3: Delhi (B, D) Visit the Gandhi memorial of Raj Ghat, Jama Masjid mosque and enjoy a rickshaw ride through the spice bazaar in Chandni Chowk. Later visit Humayun's Tomb and join Sikhism rituals inside Bangla Sahib Gurudwara. Stroll through the downtown market in Connaught Place before a welcome dinner in a local restaurant.
Day 4: Delhi > Agra (B) We depart early for Agra and this afternoon visit Agra Fort before watching the sun set over the Taj Mahal.
Day 5: Agra > Ranthambhore (B, D) Visit the Taj Mahal for the sunrise and after breakfast see the fascinating step well at Abhaneri. Continue to Ranthambhore National Park, the maharajas' hunting ground until 1970 and now the best place to spot wild tigers in Rajasthan. The park comprises wild jungle scrub and rocky ridges. In the centre of the park is the 10th century Ranthambhore Fort with ancient temples and mosques, hunting pavilions, crocodile-filled lakes and vine-covered burial tombs scattered around.
Day 6/7: Ranthambhore (B, L, D) Set off on morning and afternoon game drives by jeep in search of some of India's rarest flora and fauna, including the elusive tiger.
Day 8: Ranthambhore > Jaipur (B) Drive to Jaipur and then drive past Jal Mahal (Water Palace) an abandoned palace seemingly floating in the middle of the Man Sagar Lake. This afternoon, perhaps taste the local specialty of mango icecream.
Day 9: Jaipur (B, L) Visit Amber Fort, a magnificent fort built from pale yellow and pink sandstone and white marble, and divided into four main sections, each with its own courtyard. Then witness prayer rituals at a Hindu Temple and perhaps see snake charmers at work. Continue on to the City Palace, Museum and the Jai Singh Observatory. If you wish you can have you palm read by a local astrologer. Enjoy a cooking class, lunch and then explore the local markets. After we head to a local cinema to experience a Bollywood movie first hand.
Day 10: Jaipur > Kolkata (B) Fly to Kolkata (Calcutta) this morning. Afternoon at leisure.
Day 11: Kolkata > Kalna (B, L, D) Join your cruiser, the Bengal Ganga this morning and so begins your Ganges cruise. In the afternoon enjoy a sightseeing tour of Kolkata which will include Dalhousie Square with its Colonial monuments, St Johns Church and the Victoria Memorial. Start sailing upstream through the areas where different settlers established their respective East India companies throughout the 17th - 19th centuries.
Day 12: Kalna > Matiari (B, L, D) Join a rickshaw to visit the Rajbari temple complex of Kalna with its unique mix of architectural styles including the Krishna Chandra temple dating from 1751. Return to your cruiser and set sail towards Matiari, mooring overnight.
Day 13: Matiari > Murshidabad (B, L, D) Matiari is known for beautiful handcrafted brass items utilising traditional methods passed down for generations. Enjoy a visit to the bazaar and set sail past the site of the battlefield of Plassey where Robert Clive of the British East India Company defeated the Mogul Nawabs. Moor at Murshidabad overnight.
Day 14: Murshidabad > Jangipur (B, L, D) Murshidabad is an architectural gem of the colonial era. Visit the Hazarduari Palace or 'palace of a thousand doors', then travel by buggy to Katra Mosque. Later sail for Jangipur for overnight.
Day 15: Jangipur > Kolkata (B, L) Disembark the ship this morning and train by train, one of the true Indian experiences, to Kolkata. On arrival transfer to a local restaurant for lunch and then on to your hotel. The afternoon is at leisure.
Day 16: Kolkata (B) Today is at leisure to explore Kolkata at your own pace. If you wish you may choose to visit Mother Theresa's house and tomb including the permanent exhibition of her life's story.
Day 17: Kolkata > Singapore (B) At leisure until our flight to Singapore.
Day 18: Singapore > Auckland Transit to your onward flight arriving Auckland late this evening.
