Legends of the North
Journey into the depths of Finland, Sweden, Norway and Denmark. You'll explore Helsinki, Stockholm, Bergen, Oslo and Copenhagen, each with its own particular charm, culture and history. Enjoy overnight cruises from Tallinn, through the stunning archipelago, to Stockholm and from Oslo to Copenhagen. Travel through the beautiful Norwegian fjords by coach, boat and train, take the motorised open Troll Cars to the glacier, and admire full panoramic views of glittering fjords, countless waterfalls and snow-capped mountains. A highlight will be a ride on the Flam Railway considered to be one of the most scenic train journeys in the world.
Day 1: Helsinki Make your own way to the hotel. Later this evening meet your tour guide who will be staying with you for the entire tour. Overnight at the centrally located Scandic Grand Marina Hotel or similar.
Day 2: Helsinki >Tallinn Breakfast buffet at the hotel. Morning city tour of the Finnish capital with a local guide. We will see the colourful harbour market, the neo-classical Senate Square, the Cathedral, the Sibelius monument, the Russian orthodox Uspenski Cathedral and the famous Church in the Rock; Temppeliaukio. Some time at leisure. Late afternoon transfer to the pier to take the ferry to Tallinn. Upon arrival to Tallinn transfer to your hotel. Overnight in Sokos Viru Hotel.
Day 3: Tallinn > Silja Line Breakfast buffet at the hotel. Morning city tour of the Estonian capital with a local guide. We will admire the Alexandre Nevski church, Dome church, and the 13-14th century Castle, where the Estonian Parliament is seated today. Walk through the narrow cobbled-stoned lanes to the Town Hall square with the 15th century Town Hall, the 15th century pharmacy, and the buildings of Great Guild and Brotherhood of Blackheads. Some time at leisure. Late afternoon transfer to the pier for an overnight cruise to Stockholm. Buffet dinner on board with wine/beer and soft drinks. Overnight in sea-view cabins.
Day 4: Stockholm Breakfast buffet on board as you sail through the breath-taking Stockholm archipelago. Morning city tour of Stockholm with a local guide who will take you on a guided tour of the Swedish capital. From Fjallgatan you will have the view of Stockholm spread out on 14 islands connected by bridges. We will visit Gamla Stan, the old city with its narrow cobbled-stoned lanes, charming small squares, brightly coloured medieval buildings, Cathedral and the Royal Palace. Afternoon free. Overnight at centrally located Clarion Hotel Stockholm.
Day 5: Stockholm Breakfast buffet at the hotel. Day at leisure in Stockholm or maybe join an optional tour to visit the City Hall where the annual Nobel Prize banquet is held. Visit the fascinating Vasa Ship museum with the unique wooden warship which sank in Stockholm's harbour on its maiden voyage and was salvaged intact 333 years later. Overnight at Clarion Hotel Stockholm.
Day 6: Stockholm > Hamar Breakfast buffet at the hotel. Today we start the journey by coach towards Norway passing open landscapes, dense forests and glittering lakes. We stop in the city of Karlstad, the capital of the province of Varmland beautifully located on the shores of Lake Varnern, the largest of Sweden's lakes. After crossing the border into Norway we continue to Hamar located by Norway's largest Lake Mjosa. Dinner and overnight at Scandic Hamar or similar.
Day 7: Hamar > Lom > Geiranger Breakfast buffet at the hotel. First stop today is Lillehammer, where the 1994 winter Olympics took place. We continue north through the green, fertile farmland of Gudbrands Valley. In Lom we stop to see the amazing wooden stave church dating back to the 12th century. Our route continues via Grotli to Geiranger. A photo-stop is made before descending the hairpin curves to the village by the fjord. The fjord and the surrounding mountains give a unique and fabulous backdrop to your stay. Dinner and overnight at the Union Hotel.
Day 8: Geiranger > Briksdal Glacier > Balestrand Breakfast buffet at the hotel. Morning cruise on the UNESCO World Heritage site Geiranger Fjord with the impressive waterfalls "the Bridal Veil" and "the Seven Sisters". Continue to Briksdal Glacier. The last part of the journey up to the glacier will be in the motorised open Troll Cars, allowing you to enjoy the full panoramic view. After the glacier experience sit back in the coach and enjoy the views of mountains and fjords passing by as we drive towards Balestrand. Our route will take us through the Gaular Mountain National Park. Late afternoon we reach the beautiful resort in Balestrand located on the shores of the fjord and surrounded by high mountains. This unique spot is quite possibly the most beautiful place on earth! Dinner and overnight at the historical Kvikne's Hotel.
Day 9: Balestrand > Bergen Breakfast buffet at the hotel. Ferry across to Hella and continue along the scenic coastal route to Manheller for a short ferry crossing to Fodnes. We then continue to Gudvangen, where we board a 2 hour mini-cruise of the Sogne Fjord, the longest and deepest fjord in the world. Marvel at the landscape as we sail into the Naeroy fjord - a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with small farms scattered on the steep hillsides of the fjord, cascading waterfalls and towering snow-clad mountains. Disembark in Flam and we continue with one of the most exceptional rail road trips in the world, the Flam Railway. With breath-taking views at every curve it will take you up to the mountain station of Myrdal where you will connect to your train to Voss where the coach awaits our arrival and take us to Bergen. Overnight in the heart of the city at Zander K Hotel or similar.
Day 10: Bergen > Geilo Breakfast buffet at the hotel. The guided tour of Bergen will take us to the famous open air fish market, stroll across to Bryggen where the traditional wooden medieval buildings still remain as in the times of the Hanseatic League. Time at leisure for shopping, lunch and maybe taking the funicular to the top of Mount Floyen for a stunning view of Bergen. In the afternoon we continue towards the Hardanger Fjord with its romantic landscape of fruit orchards and rounded mountains. We make a stop at the impressive Voringsfoss waterfall with has a vertical drop of 180 meters, before ascending the Hardanger Mountain Plateau and reaching the resort town of Geilo. Dinner and overnight at Bardola Hoyfjellshotell.
Day 11: Geilo > Oslo Breakfast buffet at the hotel. This morning we head for Oslo, the capital of Norway, with arrival around noon. Some free time for lunch before going on the guided tour of Oslo, which takes you to the Frogner Park with the controversial sculptures of the famous Norwegian Gustav Vigeland. Other highlights of the tour area include the Royal Palace, the medieval fortress Akershus, the modern Opera house, the City Hall and more. Remainder of the day free to explore Oslo, the pedestrian street Karl Johan and the lovely shopping and restaurant wharf Aker Brygge. Overnight at Thon Hotel Opera or similar.
Day 12: Oslo > DFDS Cruise Breakfast buffet at the hotel. Morning free to continue exploring Oslo, maybe visit some of the famous maritime museums such as the Viking Ships or the Polar ship Fram. Late afternoon transfer to the pier for embarkation of the DFDS Seaways overnight cruise to Copenhagen. Enjoy the view heading out through the Oslo Fjord from the deck or one of the cafes or bars on board. Dinner tonight is the famous Scandinavian Smorgasbord buffet. Overnight in sea-view cabins.
Day 13: Copenhagen Breakfast buffet onboard as you sail into Copenhagen. Upon arrival in Copenhagen meet your local guide showing you some of the highlights of Copenhagen; the little Mermaid, the Gefion fountain, the royal residence Amalienborg Palace, Christianshavn and Nyhavn with its charming canals etc. Afternoon free to enjoy this fairy-tale city on your own. Overnight at Radisson Blu Scandinavia Hotel.
Day 14: Departure Copenhagen Breakfast buffet at the hotel. Your arrangements end.
