Undiscovered Indonesia - Amankila Resort
Amankila is a tranquil beachside haven on the remote east coast of Bali. The resort, set against the dramatic backdrop of distant stratovolcano Mt Agung, is enveloped by lush vegetation and overlooks the Lombok Strait.
Amankila's layout draws inspiration from the nearby Karangasem palaces - including the nested motif of the Maskerdam Building - with features including a serene, three-tiered pool tumbling down the hillside like a cascading rice field.
Scuba divers and snorkellers will find wonder in the unspoilt coral reefs, and the waves attract surfers and kayakers. The island emanates with crafts, culture and a royal past; and evenings are perfect for romantic dinners on the beach.
Amankila is situated in the heart of one of Bali's most traditional areas, with Mount Agung towering over its seaside setting. The resort is the ideal base for discovering East Bali's rural countryside, its coast, crafts, culture and royal past. Ujung, the water palace built by the last Raja of Karangasem is located just a short drive from Amankila and is reflected in elements of the resort's design. The Karangasem Royal Palace is another historic site worth visiting. It was also the source of Amankila's recurring design motif - a series of inwardly curving shapes originally depicted on the ornate entrance doors to Maskerdam.
Set atop stilts amid the treetops, the 34 free-standing Suites have been fashioned as Balinese beach houses with private outdoor terrace. The Garden Suite is designed to offer guests privacy and maximize spectacular sea and hillside views with an expansive outdoor terrace. The Ocean Suites face the Lombok Strait against the backdrop of Mt Agung. Elegantly spread over with expansive terraces, they offer guests exceptional privacy.
